Damage reporting procedure

Damage reports only concern those damages that could jeopardize the class worthiness of the ship or the safety of those on board. The following damage will in any case be reported:

  • Damage to hull, rudder, propeller and propeller shaft,
  • Damage to anchor gear,
  • Damage to bowsprit and jib boom,
  • Damage to masts, topmasts, booms, gaffs, yards and standing rigging,
  • Damage to winches,
  • Unusual damage to running rigging,
  • Damage to navigation lights, navigation instruments which can seriously affect the safe navigation of the ship,
  • Failure and damage of main electricity systems,
  • Failure or limited operation of main engine and/or generators,
  • Failure, damage or limited operation of marine gear and pressure block.
  • The owner/skipper reports the damage to the ship to LMS as soon as possible by telephone or e-mail.
  • The seriousness of the damage and any personal injury is stated.
  • The owner/skipper emails a captain’s statement to LMS.
  • If necessary, a damage inspection is scheduled by LMS.
  • The LMS surveyor draws up a damage report and a surveyor’s report with the findings.
  • LMS informs ILT.
  • In case of major damage, the class certificate is formally withdrawn by LMS, the ship is not allowed to continue sailing. The class certificate remains on board the ship, but must be reactivated after repairs have been made.
  • In case of unknown, moderate or limited damage, LMS will impose a class condition on the affected part, after repair of the damage and approval of the repair, the restriction on the part will be lifted by LMS.
  • The owner/skipper is responsible for all documentation, reporting and other evidence to be provided to LMS for the repair of the damage.
